DamnSmallLinux via PXE booten
In “PC Intern” Ausgabe 4/05 erklärten wir, wie der mittels PXE initiierte Bootvorgang über das Netzwerk funktioniert. Als Anschauungsobjekt diente unter anderem DamnSmallLinux, welches sich dank seiner kompakten Größe komplett in der Ramdisk unterbringen lässt. Die Notwendigkeit für einen NFS-Server und eine Ramdisk mit Netzwerkkartentreibern entfällt. (English version inside)
Nun steht ein Update für die verwendete DSL-Konfiguration bereit, die mit DamnSmallLinux 2.2b funktioniert. DamnSmallLinux kann damit direkt als Terminalserver verwendet werden, der PXE fähige Clients über das Netz booten lässt.
Die Einrichtung ist schnell vorgenommen:
- Laden Sie in einem laufenden DSL das Script pxedsl.sh herunter
- Rufen Sie es auf: sudo bash pxedsl.sh
Das Script lädt eine Archivdatei mit TFTP- und DHCP-Server herunter (weniger als 400kB), entpackt sie, modifiziert die Ramdisk, fragt einige Netzwerk-Parameter ab und startet die beiden notwendigen Dienste. PXE fähige Clients, bei denen Booten aus dem Netzwerk aktiviert ist, starten DSL ganz automatisch. Clients, die noch kein PXE beherrschen, können mit einer Etherboot-Floppy von Rom-o-Matic trotzdem aus dem Netz gebootet werden (aktivieren Sie PXE-Emulation).
Introducing the DamnSmallLinux Terminal Server
This is an update to the PXE boot configuration introduced in September 2005. It turns an unmodified DamnSmallLinux 2.2b into a fully equipped terminal server that allows PXE bootable clients to be started via the network.
Starting the DSL terminal server is easy:
- Download the script pxedsl.sh
- Run it: sudo bash pxedsl.sh
The script will download an archive containing the TFTP and DHCP daemons as well as some prepared configuration files, it unpacks the original initrd, unpacks, patches and packs it. You will be prompted some network parameters before the services are started. Configure your clients to use the network as first boot device and they’ll boot DSL via the net. If your clients are not capable of PXE, let Rom-o-Matic create a boot floppy (please activate PXE emulation).
