PC Praxis 05/2007 mit Multibuntu (Update)
Eigentlich könnte Ubuntu ein idealer Einstieg in die Linux-Welt sein. Die Distribution läuft auch auf schwacher Hardware und die Nutzerschnittstelle ist sehr intuitiv. Leider erfordert die Beschränkung auf eine CD bereits bei der Installation den Download vieler Megabyte an Sprachpaketen, was Ubuntu vor allem für Modem-Nutzer wenig attraktiv macht.
Für PC Praxis 05/2007 haben wir eine Lösung für dieses Problem erarbeitet: Ein um Sprachpakete und alle Pakete aus Kubuntu und Xubuntu erweitertes Ubuntu, das mit etwa 1,2GB einen DVD-Rohling erfordert. Die Distribution liegt als ISO-Image auf Heft-DVD bei.
Wegen bisher guter Erfahrungen bei Updates haben wir es gewagt, auf die Beta-Version von Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn zu setzen. Dieses läuft bereits sehr stabil, ist aber an einigen Stellen nicht vollständig lokalisiert. Selbstverständlich werden wir Leser mit Modem-Zugang auch beim Update auf die finale Version nicht im Stich lassen: Sobald Ubuntu 7.04 veröffentlicht ist, wird die Heft-DVD von PC Praxis einen großen Update-Pack und viel zusätzliche Software enthalten.
Informationen zum Online-Update sowie Linklisten mit weiterführenden Seiten veröffentlichen wir nach Ostern hier und in der PC Praxis Networld. Zukünftige Ausgaben der PC Praxis werden zudem Artikel zum optimalen Einrichten eines Multiboot-Systems (auch zusammen mit Windows Vista) und zum Umgang mit Updates sowie der Nachinstallation von Software enthalten.
So geht’s: Multibuntu tagesaktuell halten
Wer über eine DSL-Verbindung nebst Flatrate verfügt, kann Multibuntu aus PC Praxis 05/2007 tagesaktuell halten und so die Schritte zur finalen Distribution miterleben. Ubuntus Aktualisierungsverwaltung kontrolliert dafür regelmäßig auf neue Softwareversionen und schlägt Updates vor. Doch bei der Aktualisierung von Herd 4/5 auf die Beta-, RC- und finalen Versionen hakelt das komfortable grafische Programm gelegentlich. Nicht aktualisierte Programme werden fortan grau hinterlegt angezeigt. Grund für teilweise zurückgehaltene Updates sind zumeist modifizierte Paketaufteilungen und leicht geänderte Abhängigkeiten.
Die genannten Änderungen sind normal während der Entwicklung einer Distribution. Leider erfordert die Korrektur oft den Griff zu den klassischen Debian-Paketwerkzeugen auf der Kommandozeile. Den möchten wir Ubuntu-Einsteigern aber nicht zumuten. Deshalb haben wir ein kleines Shell-Script erstellt, das alle notwendigen Schritte durchführt. Gehen Sie wie folgt vor:
- Laden Sie die Datei mbupd.sh herunter. Ubuntu wird sie in der Regel auf dem Desktop speichern.
- Öffnen Sie ein Terminal-Fenster und führen Sie das Script mit Administratorrechten aus:
sudo bash Desktop/mbupd.sh
- Sie werden jetzt mehrfach aufgefordert, die Eingabetaste zu drücken, es folgt der Download und die Installation von ca. 600MB Paketen. Sollte das Script an irgendeiner Stelle abbrechen — beispielsweise weil die Internetverbindung nicht verfügbar ist, rufen Sie es erneut auf. Ist das Script fertig, wird dies angezeigt.
Bis zur endgültigen Release der finalen Version ist es wahrscheinlich, dass Sie das Script mbupd.sh gelegentlich anwenden müssen. Danach sollte der Update-Notifier alle Aktualisierungen erledigen.
